River Jacks - LaCrosse, WI

The deal: At River Jacks, you order your fish and starch from a waitress and head to the buffet for the rest of your salad and sides.

The food: Although walleye was on the menu (always a bonus in my book), the fish was merely average and not especially crispy. The potato pancakes were the worst I've had in a long time - too thin and ultimately tasteless. The buffet was big, but by far the most distinguishing thing on it was applesauce. You gotta have applesauce for the potato pancakes!

The drink menu had a few fun cocktails and a good beer selection, as should be expected in LaCrosse.

The flavor: Rivers Jacks' location on the Black River is beautiful. Inside, I got the impression that the restaurant is something of a tourist trap and it makes me eager to find out where locals go for truly good fish.

Hi,
I sort of randomly found your blog looking for review websites in Wisconsin. The locals in La Crosse go to many places for Fish Fry Friday but a few of my favorites are The La Crosse Family Restaurant on the North Side, Blue Moon in Onalaska and Ardies on Ward Ave.
Awesome blog! Thanks
Katie

Surprised you don't have Syl's Place, near Barre Mills on your blog for a place around La Crosse WI

I would agree with the previous anonymous statement. However I also have a few favorites...If you don't mind the drive, Stoddard wi (south of La crosse on hwy 35) is home of Rockies (casual dining). They have a great fish fry but don't forget their famous battered cheese curds for an appetizer. I would also try Maple Grove in West Salem. Great Fish...probably the best in the area. Specializing in battered cod loins. The fish is firm and batter is perfect. Good atmosphere, too as it has many seats overlooking their 18 hole golf course.
